Quality skincare products don’t have to cost the earth, here are some of my favourites:
Pond’s Cold Cream – €5.99
This iconic product needs no introduction. It’s been around since the dawn of time, or at least since I discovered it on my Mom’s dressing table in the 80s, and has been selling millions of pots all over the world for over 100 years. You can’t argue with that. Its versatility makes it a great cleanser, toner and moisturiser, or pop on a thicker layer for five minutes as a moisturising face mask. Laura Whitmore and Kylie Minogue are just two of its many fans, but I think our mothers are a better endorsement than any celebrity.
Silcock’s Base – €3.99
My Mom has always advocated Silcock’s Base and Aqueous cream (a similar product) as the best cleanser and moisturiser a girl could possibly wish for. And based on how great her skin is, I’m trying my best to follow suit. This is the least sexy looking product you’ll have in your bathroom, but it works. It’s safe enough for babies so it’s perfect for sensitive skin and having tried many other moisturisers over the years, I always come back to this. This thick, white cream is super versatile, reliable, lasts for months and all for less than four euro.
Bio Oil Scar and Stretch Mark Oil – €7.50
This little wonder is renowned for preventing and softening scarring during pregnancy. But it’s not just for Moms to be, it’s a brilliant all-rounder that can be used as a cleanser and moisturiser. As well as being great for scars and scar tissue, try a tiny drop warmed between the palms as a quick fix hair serum, and with continuous use it really evens out skin tone.
Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser – €14.99
This cleanser is a little more expensive, but if you have sensitive skin it’s worth every penny. It’s often recommended by doctors for irritable or eczema prone skin very as it’s as gentle as a pillow made of clouds and candyfloss. My dear friend Jedda recommended it to me about five years ago and I have been a loyal fan ever since. It’s got a liquid consistency which will melt away make up, even waterproof mascara, and you can use it with or without water.
Vaseline – €1.99
Oh Vaseline, you little beauty. Yes it’s a fantastic lip balm but what I love are all the possibilities for this wee pot of magic. Use it to soften hard skin, particularly elbows and feet, use it as a cuticle softener, use it as a highlighter on your shoulders or a little shine for your cheekbones, pop it on your eyelashes before you got to sleep to help strengthen them, it goes on and on. If I could marry it, I would.
